Back pain is probably the most common condition presented to Chiropractors and for which Chiropractic is remarkably successful. Back pain can present itself in many ways and can often be debilitating. Back pain is usually a result of a misalignment of the spine and the associated muscles, ligaments, joints, discs and nerves.
The aim of chiropractic is to determine the underlying cause and treat this rather than simply treating the symptoms restoring quality of life.
Many headaches are caused by neck misalignment. These are called cervicogenic or tension headaches. Chiropractic is very effective for relieving these types of headaches. Migraines are a different type of headache which may also respond to Chiropractic care.
No matter whether the headache is an occasional event of a mild nature or a debilitating migraine, it is smarter to identify a chiropractic problem and correct that than to blockade the symptoms with painkillers and let the underlying cause remain.
What causes neck pain?
An adult head weighs approximately 4.5 to 5kg or the weight of a small bowling ball. If this weight is not centred over the shoulders, postural stress will inevitably create potential for neck pain. The joints of the neck are exquisitely sensitive to misalignment.
The most common causes of neck pain include:
- Assuming awkward positions for an extended period of time
- Whiplash/Car accidents
- Concussions/Sporting injuries
- Over use of electronic devices such as phones, tablets or computers without attention to good posture
- Carrying personal baggage on a single shoulder or overloaded backpacks on both shoulders
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. When looking at the spine from straight on it should appear straight and side on it is normally shaped like an S. A scoliosis curvature often appears shaped as an S or C from the front. Not all scoliosis needs surgery, and many people live their whole lives not knowing they have one.
Chiropractors are integral in making the brain aware of the spine’s distortions, and provide critical support to the rehabilitation process.
Arthritis literally means inflammation of the joint. It is not a single condition and there are many different types of arthritis which can affect one or more joints in the body. It is a condition that can affect people of all ages.
Arthritis can cause joints to be inflamed which can lead to stiffness, pain, loss of movement and sometimes swelling. Arthritis can affect most joints in the body and is not restricted to the hands.
Where arthritis is concerned pain is a part of the inflammatory process and Chiropractors assist in managing that pain and restoring mobility to the joints.
Physical, chemical and emotional stress can cause spinal misalignment. Chiropractors are a valuable asset to stress management. Long term stress will cause permanent damage to the body.
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and emerges from the lumbar spine. A misaligned lower back or pelvis can cause sciatica. The sciatic nerve can also get squeezed by tight muscles down the leg.
